Shitajiki (literally under-sheet)(Pencil Board) is a Japanese word for various types of materials placed under a sheet of paper for writing, either to prevent marking on the sheets below or to provide a better surface for writing.
Shitajiki for handwriting are generally about 1 mm to 2 mm in thickness, making them flexible but still durable. Typically, they are B5 sized (slightly smaller than US Standard Letter Size).
Merchandised Shitajiki are very common, featuring images of everything from tourist attractions, celebrities (Movie Stars, Baseball Players), Anime, Video and Manga characters. Most boards have a front and back picture, others may have a front picture with series or stats information on the back and some are transparent with a front picture only.
