Blackwater River First Edition Robbie Lawrence

Looking at a map of the southeastern United States, the 245-mile Ogeechee River diagonally bisects eastern Georgia, curving south of Savannah to empty into the Atlantic Ocean. Known locally as the "Blackwater River," its slow-moving waters are like black glass, reflecting the sky and vegetation above, concealing the tangle of life below.

In November 2017, Robbie Lawrence, accompanied by writer Sarah Paterson, visited the Lowcountry, the coastal region spanning Georgia and South Carolina, near where the Ogeechee River meets the sea.

"Blackwater River" captures Lawrence's time in the Lowcountry, both visually and spiritually. A series of meaningful encounters and the author's abstract reflections are sometimes moving, sometimes brutal, but always unforgettable. Each moment is individually significant, while collectively hinting at a larger, more elusive truth.
